Text Box: The Gretna Volunteer Fire Department is located in Pittsylvania County which is the largest county in the state of Virginia. GVFD protects the largest response area in the county with over 100 square miles of first due area and over 300 square miles of mutual aide. 
Since 1935 the department has grown to be one of the most advanced fire departments in the county. Offering the community much more than fire suppression we have the only Tech Rescue Team in the county which broadens our abilities to better serve our community.

Highway 29 MVA w/ Fatality

4/15/07 - At 18:00 hrs. Station 22 and Squad 10 were dispatched to a MVA

with unknown injuries.  E-222 w/4 responded in less than 3 minutes and dispatch

advised that multiple calls have been received and there was a possibility of one fatality.

E-222 arrived to find a two vehicle accident truck vs. car. Fatality was confirmed and E-222s

crew extricated the patient by removing the door. There were no other patients. All units

cleared at 19:00 Hrs

.

 

Brush Truck Complete!

4/1/07 - For two months Brush 225 has been out of service for upgrades.

At the end of January 225 was taken to the local Vocational center were students

in the welding shop was given the task of making a flat bed to fit the truck so

it would be better utilized on brush fires. The class consisting of 11th and 12th

graders did a fantastic job and we thank them and their teacher for a well done job.

Run Away Control Burn

3/27/07 - Station 22 and Station 31 (Hurt) were dispatched to a report of a Barn fire

which was a result of a control burn that got out of control. Seeing heavy

smoke from a distance Chief 22 requested St. 39 (Cool Branch) for a tanker which

brought Tanker 396 w/ 3000 gallons to the scene. E-223 w/5 arrived laying 5 inch LDH

down the driveway for a supply line.E-223s crew then pulled two 1 3/4"

hand lines. Thanks to an aggressive attack and assistance from station 31

and 39 crews the barn was saved.

 

Gretna Members Meet Chief Brunacini

3/17/06 - Members traveled to Danville Community College in hopes of learning

great knowledge from a well liked and past Chief of Phoenix Fire Department

Alan Brunacini. Many stories were told about lessons learned during this full

day class. Members did scenario based learning and also had one on one conversation

with this well respected Chief. 

Brush Fire On Red Flag Day

2/22/07 - E-222 w/3 responded to a brush fire on Old Mine Rd. reported to be at least two

acres on dispatch. Since B-225 is temporarily out of service Chatham was automatically

dispatched to assist with a brush truck. With a 22 member calling in the fire, forestry

was quickly dispatched to keep the fire to a minimum.

 

2nd Due Shed Fire

2/21/07 - E-223 w/3 and T-226 responded to Chatham 2nd due to assist with a

reported structure fire in Chatham. Upon arrival of Chatham units a shed was found

fully involved with a vehicle inside and a near by house as an exposure. E-223's

crew assist with fire control and overhaul.

 

The Roof The Roof The Roof Is On Fire!

2/18/07 - 00:02 Hrs. Gretna and Hurt Fire Departments were dispatched to a

kitchen fire on Payne St. in the town of Gretna. Upon arrival of Engine 223 w/6

passed command with fire showing through the roof. E-223's crew made an aggressive

interior attack with E-222 w/4 hitting the plug. Fire damage was kept to a minimum and

was contained to the kitchen with little extension to a bathroom. Home owners said fire

was caused by unattended cooking on the stove.

Brush Fire in Franklin County

2/10/07 - Shortly after returning to the station from the knuckle boom fire, St.22

was once again dispatched to assist St.39 (Cool Branch) with a brush fire in Franklin

County. With St. 22s Brush Truck out of service, E-223 w/6 and T-226 w/2 responded

and arrived to be staged at the county line to cover all further calls that the stations on scene

may have. E-223 and T-226 covered 5 stations areas and ran one call within the 2 hours

of filling in.  

 

Knuckle Boom Fire in Cool Branch

2/10/07 - Around 8:20 Station 22 was called to assist Station 39 (Cool Branch)

with a Knuckle Boom on fire at a wood cutting operation on Star Land Dr.

E-223 w/3 and T-226 w/2 responded and assisted with fire attack and water supply.

 

Fire on Sunset Bay

2/9/07 - At 2:30 Station 22 and Station 31 (Hurt) were dispatched to a working

structure fire in the Sunset Bay development. Caller advised the structure was

under construction and fire was showing. At this time two more departments

(Climax and Chatham) were added to the alarm. After a 16 minute ride to the far reaches

of our first due E-223 w/5 arrived to find a large fully involved structure with most

of the structure in the basement. Under the command of Chief 22, E-223 pulled a

2 1/2" preconnect off and gated it down to two 1 3/4" lines. Do to icy conditions

hampering all operations including water supply, the incident continued until sunrise.

Command was terminated at 7:00 Hrs.

Calls Continue!!!!!

2/4/07 - After a busy Saturday and many tired members the calls continued.

After doing the monthly cleanup St. 22 was dispatched for a MVA on route 40 west

around 14:30 hrs. E-222 w/5 arrived to find a vehicle in the roadway with no patients

and called it a can handle for the engine which turned around the rescue w/4. State trooper

arrived and cleared the engine.

While finally sitting down to watch the super bowl and enjoy some buffalo wings St.22

was once again dispatched on another call.

Around 20:00 hrs. St.22 and St.21 (Chatham) were dispatched for a structure fire

at 718 S main St. With E-223 (w/6) arriving 4 minutes after dispatch and hitting the plug,

E-223 found a fire on the back porch of a single story single family dwelling. Command

(Chief 22) marked it a can handle for the water can. After quickly knocking down

the fire and putting 200 ft. of 5" back on the truck St.22 was placed back in service.

Full Moon + Stirring Stew = Multiple Calls

2/3/07 - With an engine and a rescue staffed and the annual stew fundraiser going

on members were kept busy with calls throughout the day. (Click for more)

 

 

Brush Truck Upgrade Starts

1/27/07 - Project 225 begins this weekend with the removal of the skid unit

and bed. The plan is to have an aluminum flat bed built for the truck and then reinstall

the skid unit. Updates to come soon!

 

Ice Brings Wrecks

1/21/07 - With training being cut short due to inclement weather St.22 was kept busy

with multiple wrecks at the same time. St.22 ran six accidents with in two hours and

kept 2 engines and a rescue fully staffed for 5 hours.

 

Ladder 39 comes to St.22

1/21/07 - Training this Sunday was a joint training with St. 39 on their recently purchased

E-One 75' Quint. With members from Gretna and Cool Branch currently taking

an aerial operator class much of the material taught in the class was brought to

this training as well. But due to inclement weather training was cut short.

Thanks to St. 39 for allowing us to use the ladder for training.

Busy Week for 22

1/19/07 - The Deuces have been extremely busy this week with multiple calls back to back.

Including multiple fires accidents and the usual smells and bells. CLICK TO SEE MORE

 

Working Fire on Brights Rd.

12/28/06 – At 9:00 Hrs. Gretna (St. 22) and Hurt (St. 31) were dispatched to a structure fire

on Brights Rd. After dispatch advised Chief 22 that Bedford county dispatch had

received many calls for the same fire, 3rd and 4th due departments were requested. E-223 arrived to find

smoke showing from the roof, on the A, B, and D sides, of a double wide mobile home. Chief 22

 established command and noticed flashover conditions and stopped the attack crew from

 entering until precautions were made. Once ready the attack crew entered the structure and

found a large amount of fire in the living room. Upon arrival of additional apparatus and man power,

the roof was opened up and water supply was established at a near by pond. After a long overhaul with

many hot spots found, crews cleared the scene 3 hours after dispatch. Units and departments

Got Milk?

12/21/06 - At 19:13 Hrs. Pittsylvania County dispatch alerted Gretna Fire and Gretna

Rescue for an MVA involving a tractor trailer. While E-222 responded dispatch advised that

the truck was on its side and was pulling a tanker type trailer which, the caller advised,

appeared to be ruptured. E-222 arrived to find the truck and trailer on its side with a white

product pooling around it. The truck driver advised that he was hauling a full load of milk and

200 gallons of diesel fuel in the saddle tanks which appeared to be unharmed. The electrical

system on the truck was secured and and two dams were built in the ditch to keep the product

contained. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) was

 notified which brought Wade Collins, our regional hazmat officer, to the scene who assisted

 with the incident and also the cleanup. After several hours waiting for another tanker to off load

the milk, the truck and trailer was up righted, six hours after dispatch. A contractor service was

notified to come clean the spill up and command was terminated at 2:00 Hrs.

  

Mobile Home Fire w/ Exposures

12/18/06 - With a month full of nothing but car wrecks and small brush fires St. 22

was due some good runs. At 19:00 Hrs. Gretna and Climax Fire departments were

dispatched to a mobile home fire on Pittsville Cir. After numerous calls to dispatch

about the fire two more stations (Chatham and Cool Branch) were added to the

assignment. With E-223 responding the Chief was told by dispatch that another mobile

home was becoming involved. Upon arrival, E-223 laid a 2 1/2 supply line down the drive

and arrived to find a mobile home and two near by vehicles fully involved. E-223s crew

went to work protecting near by mobile homes (which were not involved) with a cross lay.

Once water supply was established, via water shuttle, a second cross lay was placed

in service and fire was knocked down. After a lengthy overhaul all units were place in

service around 21:30 Hrs. with only one minor FF injury reported. Fire is under

investigation by the Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal.

Apartment Fire

11/16/06 - Around 9:30 dispatched alerted Gretna and Hurt Fire Departments for an apartment

fire at the Gretna Village Apartments. After numerous calls and a Deputy arriving on scene

confirming a working fire a third due station (Chatham) was alerted. Gretna E-223 w/3

responded and arrived to find a two story row of apartments with light smoke showing

from the second floor of apartment 23. An attack was made on the fire while E-312

established a water supply at a near by hydrant. Attack crew was met with heavy smoke

and high heat on the second floor. After finding the seat of the fire and making a quick knock

down a window was knocked out for ventilation. The neighboring apartments were checked

for extension which came up negative. Fire was contained to a bedroom with heat and

smoke damage to the rest of the second floor.

2 MVAs After Fire

11/7/06 - After returning from the fire on Music St. and everyone just getting back to bed the tones

sound again. This time for an MVA on Deer View Rd. E-222 arrived to find a single vehicle

off the road down an embankment. There were no patients and no hazards so the engine cleared

shortly after arrival of the Trooper. Then once again later on in the day St. 22 was dispatched

for another MVA w/ no injuries. E-222 arrived to find this vehicle also off the roadway except

this time the vehicle was up an embankment on West Gretna Rd. Command confirmed no injuries

and the engine returned to service shortly after the State Trooper arrived.

 

1st Due Worker

11/7/06 - At 2:08 this morning Gretna Fire, Hurt Fire (St. 31) and Climax Fire (St. 32) Departments

 along with Gretna Rescue (Sq. 10) were alerted for a structure fire on S Music St. in Gretna. Upon

arrival of first arriving engine (E-223 w/6) fire and smoke was visible from the second floor side C

of a large 2 story balloon frame residential structure. After E-223 laid 500' of 5" the

crew pulled a line to the second floor and made an aggressive attack and knock down on the fire.

An extensive overhaul operation was performed due to the type of structure and the fire was

contained to the second floor bathroom. Units remained on scene 2 hours.

E-223 Second Due

10/25/06 - Station 32 (Climax) and Station 22 were dispatched for a structure fire on Toshes Rd.

Upon arrival of first due engine, 322, the mobile home was fully involved. Attack lines were pulled

off of both E-322 and E-223 to extinguish the fire. St 21 (Chatham) and St. 35 (Callands)

were also dispatched to assist with water shuttle operations. Luckily during the

growing stages of the fire the home owner woke up and got out of the house safely.

First Set of Hydraulic Tools for 22

10/17/06 - Gretna Fire Department placed in service its first set of hydraulic extrication tools. Genesis

Brute Vario Combi tool and a two tool pump were placed on E-222 to help us better assist our

community. The combi tool is the largest Genesis makes and it highly impressed the members of St. 22.

Gretna Fire Department would like to thank all the individuals in the community that helped us

purchase this equipment.

 

Heavy Vehicle Accident w/ Hazmat Spill

10/12/06 - Station 22 (Gretna Fire) and Squad 10 (Gretna Rescue) were dispatched at 14:30

for a vehicle accident with possible entrapment. Dispatch later advised that vehicle in the accident

was a large truck with unknown contents. Click here for more.
