Heavy Vehicle Accident w/ Hazmat Spill

10/12/06 - Station 22 (Gretna Fire) and Squad 10 (Gretna Rescue) were dispatched at 14:30

for a vehicle accident with possible entrapment. Dispatch later advised that vehicle in the accident

was a large truck with unknown contents. Upon arrival of E-222 w/3, it was found

that there was no entrapment and the truck was an unloaded logging truck. With heavy

damage to the truck one saddle tank was ruptured and the other was leaking. The

driver of the truck advised that they were both near full. With one tank now completely

empty the leak from the other tank was stopped by clamping a fuel line. With the estimated fuel spill at

100 gallonsVDEM was notified and WEL was dispatched for clean up. Station 21 (Chatham)

was requested to assist with the damming and dikeing of fluids and with the landing

zone for the driver to be flown out.

This is the second Heavy Vehicle to hit this tree coming from the same direction

in less than a year. Units cleared scene at 17:30. Units operating at scene and LZ
